Between constant devaluations and rising elite-status thresholds, being loyal to one airline program rarely makes sense anymore. Still, I’ve decided to go all in on Alaska’s Atmos Rewards.

It’s one of the few programs that follows a mostly fixed award chart, partners with a wide range of airlines, and even counts award flights toward elite status.

Here’s why I’ve shifted most of my flying and points into Alaska’s ecosystem and how you can maximize Atmos Rewards.

The sweet spots I keep booking

1. Ultra-cheap short-hauls

Atmos uses distance-based award pricing, so short flights can often be a steal. Partner awards under 700 miles start at just 4,500 points one way in economy — perfect for weekend getaways or positioning flights.

Take, for instance, a flight from Chicago to Washington, D.C. That route can easily run around $200 one way in the main cabin, but when booked through Atmos, it costs just 4,500 points plus $18 in taxes and fees, yielding over 4 cents per point in value.

Flight search results for a Chicago to Washington, D.C. nonstop flight showing a $165 cash fare or 4,500 Alaska Atmos points plus $18 in taxes.

2. Cross-country lie-flats

Business class within the Americas starts at 35,000 points each way in the 2,101 to 4,000-mile band. That covers premium transcontinental routes like New York or Boston to Los Angeles on American Airlines. Availability isn’t always wide open, but when you can find availability, this redemption is tough to beat.

3. Europe without the splurge

Business class to Europe typically runs between 45,000 to 55,000 points each way from East Coast gateways or 70,000 from the West Coast. I usually look for flights on partners like Condor, American, or Aer Lingus to cities like Paris, Frankfurt, or Dublin, since they often have lower taxes and fees. From there, I can book separate flights to connect deeper into Europe.

Award search results for a nonstop New York to Dublin flight showing 22,500 points plus $19 in economy or 45,000 points plus $19 in business through Atmos Rewards.

4. Free stopovers

You can add a stopover (up to 14 days) on a one-way international award to turn one redemption into two trips. Think New York to the Maldives with a few days in Doha in between. To book, search for a multi-city award and select the “Use points” option. It takes some trial and error to piece together, but when it works, the payoff can be huge.

13 travel must-haves for surviving long-haul flights

There’s no doubt about it — long-haul flights can be tough. But after taking dozens of them, including trips as far as Australia, we’ve learned a few tricks to stay comfortable, even when crammed into a narrow seat with minimal recline for hours. The good news is there are plenty of travel essentials that can make the journey much easier. Here are our top 13 must-haves to bring with you on your next long-haul flight (and they're great for short trips, too!).

A global partner network

Atmos Rewards has one of the most diverse and useful lineups of airline partners. You can redeem Atmos points across Oneworld and several non-alliance carriers, including American Airlines, Japan Airlines, Qatar Airways, Condor, Aer Lingus, Icelandair, Starlux, and more. The lineup gives you access to nearly every major region around the world.

Your award flights help you earn status

Atmos now awards one status point per mile flown on award tickets, including partner flights. So even when you redeem points, you’re still inching closer to upgrades and priority perks.

Elite-status thresholds are also lower than most U.S. carriers, and starting this year, Alaska will give you greater flexibility in how you earn status. You’ll be able to choose whether you want to qualify through distance flown, spend, or segments.

Transferring points from Bilt is easy

One of the best parts about Atmos Rewards is how easy it is to earn points through Bilt Rewards. Points transfer to Atmos at a 1:1 ratio, and in my experience, the transfers usually process within minutes. So every rent payment, every meal at a restaurant in the Bilt Neighborhood Benefits program, and every Lyft ride can turn into Atmos points.

Why I’m betting on Atmos

Between low redemption rates, broad partner reach, and the ability to earn status on award travel, Alaska has built one of the most rewarding frequent-flyer programs.

Sure, partner space can sometimes be hit or miss, and not every route prices at the minimum, but when 45k points can get me a lie-flat seat to Europe, I’ll gladly do the extra searching.

Atmos isn’t perfect, but it’s packed with value: low short-haul rates, competitive long-haul pricing, free international stopovers, and elite credit on award tickets. If you already earn through Bilt, transferring to Atmos is one of the easiest ways to stretch your points and unlock better award flights.

AirTags are a “must have” for your next trip

An Apple AirTag sits next to a smartphone displaying the AirTag app screen.

Before you jet off on your next getaway, grab a 4-pack of AirTags and place them in all your checked luggage — and even your carry-ons. You’ll feel much more secure when traveling, and if your luggage does get lost, you’ll have a much easier time tracking it down.
