Long flights and boring airport layovers are inevitable during the summer travel season, so having a good book on hand (especially on a Kindle) can make all the difference.

Fortunately, Amazon’s annual book sale is happening right now through April 28th, and whether you're a book lover or an occasional reader, there’s something for everyone in this sale. Here are some of our favorite picks that will have you wishing there were more pages to turn during your next trip.

Fiction: "James"

James, the 2024 Barnes & Noble Book of the Year by Percival Everett, has received numerous awards for its incredible twist on a classic: Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. If you aren't familiar with the plot of this classic novel, it follows the life of a young boy named Huck Finn, who meets an enslaved man by the name of Jim during his travels.

In James, the classic story is reimagined, but from the perspective of Jim and his experience being sold into slavery. Following a very similar plot that many already know and love, Huck and Jim set sail on their adventure once again.

Historical: "The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store"

A story by James McBride that intertwines mystery and history, The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store begins with a skeleton found buried under a historical home. From there, the reader is transported into the past to a beautifully diverse community of individuals who guide the reader to the story behind this hidden body.

The book primarily follows Moshe, a young Romanian immigrant in the 1930s who finds himself in the town of Pottstown, where he lives upon Chicken Hill. As the journey progresses, readers will see Moshe begin to flourish in his new life and how the community in Pottstown grows closer in companionship.

It all leads up to the grand reveal — the identity of the skeleton that was found in present day.

Science Fiction: "Annie Bot"

Annie Bot by Sierra Greer is set in a future society with highly advanced AI systems. A futuristic robot with the name Annie has been created as a perfect partner for a man named Doug. Annie has been programmed to assist Doug with all his wants and needs.

Eventually, Annie begins to gain consciousness of her place in life. Realizing her role in this odd society, the story takes a twist that will leave readers in awe. Annie Bot challenges readers to question whether Annie deserves autonomy or worth due to her role as a robotic servant.

Fantasy: "The House in the Cerulean Sea"

A heartwarming fantasy story, The House in the Cerulean Sea by TJ Clune follows Linus Baker, a caseworker for the Department in Charge of Magical Youth. Baker’s life changes drastically when he is assigned to a highly classified case where six children at an orphanage are a threat to the government in their magical world.

As Baker begins to learn more about the children, he finds himself questioning the rule of the system he serves. With rich characters, The House in the Cerulean Sea will leave readers feeling like their best moral self.

Romance: "Funny Story"

If you haven’t read one of Emily Henry's books yet, you're missing out on the "rom-coms" of the book world.

Dystopian: "Sunrise on the Reaping"

With a whiff of romance, the book shows the young boy trying to win the games to return home to his lover.
