There’s a moment in every travel hacker’s journey that is pure, unfiltered bliss. It’s the moment you find it: the perfect award availability for a trip you’ve been dreaming of for years. For me, that moment came when I found a 7-night stay in an overwater bungalow at The Standard, Maldives, for a fantastic rate. With the clock ticking on Hyatt’s award chart changes (that have sadly since gone into effect), I was bent on acting fast.
I had the 203,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points ready to go. The transfer is usually a seamless 1:1 process — though that’s a bit more complicated now that the Hyatt transfer ratio depends on which Chase card you have, but I digress. I logged into my Chase account, entered my Hyatt number, and hit “submit.” And then… an error message that “special handling” was required, prompting me to call Chase.
I called the number on the back of my Chase card, confident that a human agent could sort out whatever digital hiccup was happening. After a few minutes on hold, the agent was just as perplexed as I was.
He tried to process the transfer on his end and received the same roadblock. “I’m sorry,” he said, “it just won’t go through.”
While he was trying a few other avenues, I spotted a Reddit thread with a group of Chase cardmembers who were running into the same roadblock. Within the conversation, someone mentioned that this error would occur when the name on the Chase account and Hyatt account were mismatched in some (even minor) way.

One of the best ways to travel for free is by earning points and miles. And while you might think you need a credit card to earn rewards, we have a secret for you — you don't, thanks to this program. This company offers plenty of ways to earn its points just by going about your daily life. (And spoiler alert: their points are incredibly valuable!) So take a look and see how you can start earning travel rewards right now with no credit card required.
Start collecting points without plastic!I pulled up my Chase account and my Hyatt account side by side. And that’s when I saw it. A tiny, seemingly insignificant detail that was the root of all my problems.
Years ago, when I created my World of Hyatt account, I had formally entered my full name, including my middle name. My Chase account, however, just had my first and last name. The systems were trying to connect two accounts for people who, in the rigid world of data, were not the same person. The names didn’t match exactly, and that was enough to block the entire transfer.
The solution was surprisingly simple. I couldn’t easily change the name on my existing Hyatt account, and I wasn’t going to change it on my credit card account. So, I created a new World of Hyatt account.
I used an alternate email address of mine and, this time, I was meticulous. I made sure the first and last name on this new Hyatt account matched my Chase account perfectly. No middle name, no initial, just an exact match.
I went back to the Chase Ultimate Rewards portal, added my new Hyatt account number, and initiated the transfer again. It went through instantly. Minutes later, the points were sitting in my new Hyatt account, and my bucket-list trip to the Maldives was officially booked.
It’s worth noting that World of Hyatt’s terms and conditions generally prohibit members from holding multiple accounts, but in a case like this where you’re just trying to get around a glitch, you’ll likely have success if you reach out to customer service after the fact, explain the situation, and ask them to merge your accounts.
Remember: Persistence pays off. Don’t let a system error derail your dream trip. There’s almost always a solution if you’re willing to dig a little deeper.
