How one Hilton card welcome offer set up my Waldorf Astoria stay

The right credit card welcome offer doesn’t just help pay for a trip. Sometimes, it can practically plan the entire vacation for you.

Earlier this year, the Hilton Honors® American Express Surpass Card returned with one of its most enticing welcome offers: 130,000 bonus points plus a free night reward after spending $3,000 within the first 6 months of account opening. This elevated bonus offer usually appears just once or twice a year, so when it came back, I knew I had to apply. Here’s how I used it to my advantage.

One of the most exciting Waldorf Astoria properties opened in spring 2025 in Guanacaste, Costa Rica, perched on a cliff overlooking one of the region’s stunning beaches. Award nights start at around 120,000 Hilton Honors points, making it exactly the type of aspirational property many travelers will want to save up their points for.

It was the perfect opportunity to finally book a long weekend getaway when the card launched this elevated welcome offer earlier this spring. As a mid-tier Hilton card, the Surpass carries a $150 annual fee, which feels refreshingly reasonable considering its perks.

It’s a great option for travelers who stay at Hilton properties a handful of times annually, since the card earns a large number of Hilton Honors points on both Hilton stays and everyday spending. Cardholders can also receive up to $200 in Hilton statement credits each year, helping offset on-property purchases during hotel stays.

However, the perk I value the most is the ability to earn an annual free night reward after spending $15,000 in a calendar year. In many ways, it almost feels like a recurring welcome offer. You not only receive a highly valuable free night certificate, but also rack up a substantial number of bonus points for future stays.

Hilton free night rewards are unique because they can be redeemed at virtually any property offering standard room reward availability. The certificate isn’t tied to a specific point value, so as long as a standard room is available (rather than a premium room reward), you can apply the award regardless of how many points the room costs.

I planned this trip nearly a year in advance, and I found that nearly every night during peak winter travel season had standard room availability, which made redeeming the certificates easy. One thing to know, though, is that Hilton free night rewards still have to be redeemed over the phone, so make sure you have your preferred property, dates, and room type ready before calling customer service.

Around the same time I opened the Hilton Honors Surpass Card, I also had several major expenses coming up, including tuition payments and moving costs. That made it relatively easy to strategically spend $15,000 on the card, allowing me to earn both the welcome offer and an additional free night reward for 2026 rather quickly.

Officially, Hilton says it can take up to 8 weeks for bonus points and free night rewards to post after meeting the spending requirements. In my case, though, both appeared within just a few business days. Suddenly, I had 130,000 bonus points and two free night rewards ready to use.

Here’s the best part: Even though I already have a foundation of three nights booked nearly 10 months in advance, I still have flexibility to add more nights later on.

Hilton points are relatively easy to earn with my new Hilton Honors Surpass Card, and one of the card’s most underrated bonus categories is 4x points on U.S. online retail purchases. That’s a surprisingly broad category that works for much of my everyday online shopping, making it easy to steadily build up my Hilton balance over time.

There are also several other ways to top off a Hilton account. American Express Membership Rewards points transfer to Hilton Honors at a favorable 1:2 ratio, and Hilton frequently sells points for as little as 0.5 cents apiece during promotions. That means you could buy 120,000 Hilton points for around $600, which is far less than the cash rate this resort often commands during peak winter travel season. (And yes, nightly rates here can easily exceed $1,000.)

For now, I’ve locked in three nights with the option to extend the trip later if I want to. Ultimately, a single credit card completely reshaped what kind of vacation feels possible, and I plan to replicate this strategy for years to come.
