There’s just about nothing worse in the life of travel hacking than collecting a bunch of points only to find that there’s no award inventory for your desired flight or hotel. Kind of makes the effort you’ve put into earning them feel wasted.
Fortunately, many of us in the points and miles world have found that if you want something badly enough, all you have to do is keep staring at the computer screen and you’ll eventually have an epiphany. There’s often some sort of noninvasive tweak that you can make to your plans to book whichever bucket-list item you’re after.
During just such an instance of duress, I noticed a simple (though admittedly inconvenient) way to book many hotels even when there’s “no” availability.

Open your Plynk accountI was recently in Amsterdam for three nights. I had booked one night at the Andaz Amsterdam Prinsengracht (great canal views), and I wanted to stay two nights at the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam — inarguably one of the top Waldorf properties on planet Earth.
Just one big problem: There were no standard rooms available. My specific dates cost more than 600,000 points per night. I didn’t have enough points for that (and I wouldn’t have paid it, anyway).
So I started toying with the length of my stay. No availability for one night. No availability for two nights. LOADS of availability for three nights. For some aggravating reason, Hilton was reserving its standard room availability for stays of at least three nights.
Here’s an example of Hilton doing just this, from a search I ran this spring. For a one-night stay, the below Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam award calendar showed three dates with standard availability in early June 2026.

But by lengthening the stay to two nights, there were suddenly five dates with standard availability. Add three nights and there are even more dates available.

This strategy doesn’t guarantee availability, but it’s a good tactic if nothing else seems to be working.

In case you missed it...
Booking one more flight could save you hundredsI decided to cancel my one night at the Andaz Amsterdam and move all three of my nights to the Waldorf Astoria Amsterdam. But your travel plans may be more rigid.
In this case, it’s worth a try to book more nights than you need — and then reach out to Hilton to cancel those throwaway nights. Because I decided to keep my reservation, I admit I haven’t formally checked to see if this works with Hilton specifically. But I do know from experience that a knowledgeable Hilton rep who is also in a good mood can do just about anything.
I’ve also found that this trick to reveal cheap award nights works not just at other Hilton properties, but at other hotel chains, too. For example, some Hyatt hotels play the same exasperating game with standard award inventory. In my experience, when you book extra nights just to secure the dates you want, Hyatt will manually cancel the nights you don’t want with a quick call or online chat.
All to say, if a hotel shows no available standard rooms, hope isn’t lost!
