When to redeem rewards for bag fees and seat selection

At one point in my life, I thought redeeming points for anything other than flights or hotel stays was basically a waste. Checked bag fees? Seat selection? Those are charges you cover in cash and move on with your life.

But the more I travel (especially with my kids), the more I’ve realized these redemptions can be worth it. Maybe you’re trying to avoid out-of-pocket costs on a tight trip budget, or perhaps the value of a better seat (hello, extra legroom) or checked bag is worth more to you than squeezing every last cent per point out of a redemption.

That said, it’s definitely not a one-size-fits-all move. Here’s how to tell the difference.

Sometimes the “worst” redemption on paper is the right one for your trip. Here’s when it can pay off:

• You want to keep your out-of-pocket costs as low as possible: If you’re trying to stick to a tight travel budget, covering bag fees or seat selection with points can make the trip feel a lot more affordable — even if the redemption value isn’t amazing.
• You’re not sitting on a huge stash of points: If you don’t travel enough to rack up big balances, using rewards for smaller expenses can make more sense than saving up for a “perfect” flight redemption.
• The upgrade meaningfully improves your experience: Extra legroom, aisle seats on long flights, or sitting together as a family can be incredibly valuable. If the upgrade turns a stressful flight into a comfortable one, that’s real value — even if the math says otherwise.
• Cash prices are unusually high: Some airlines charge eye-watering fees for checked bags or preferred seats. If the cash cost is inflated, redeeming rewards can help you sidestep that hit.
• You have points that are hard to use elsewhere: If you have a stash of miles you can’t seem to use, redeeming them for travel extras can be a practical way to get value.

Other times, paying cash and protecting your balance is the smarter play. Hold onto your points if:

• You could get significantly more value elsewhere: If those same points could cover a flight or hotel stay at a much higher value, burning them on bag fees or seats can be a poor tradeoff.
• The redemption rate is terrible: Some programs give you a flat, low value for these purchases. If you’re getting something like half a cent per point, you’re probably better off paying cash.
• You already have perks that cover it: Many airline credit cards offer free checked bags or seat selection benefits, so make sure to check for perks you already have before you pay.
• You’re close to a more valuable redemption: If you’re just a little short of booking a flight with points, it usually makes more sense to save them instead of chipping away at your balance for smaller expenses.
• The fee itself is avoidable: If you can pack lighter, check in early for better seat options, or choose an airline that includes these benefits, it may not be worth using rewards at all.

At the end of the day, redeeming rewards for checked bags or better seats is a personal decision. If doing so improves your travel experience or saves you a meaningful amount of money, that’s all that matters.
