Every traveler has a line in the sand when it comes to comfort. For Points Path contributor Harrison Pierce, that means always paying for a premium-cabin upgrade when it costs $50 per hour or less. For my family, that line is drawn at about eight hours of flying time in a single day. If we can keep our transit under that threshold, we can happily manage in economy without feeling too fatigued or frustrated. But once the itinerary creeps past that eight-hour mark, I start hunting for deals in premium economy or business class.
This personal rule was put to the test while planning our trip home from Santorini, Greece (JTR), to Raleigh, North Carolina (RDU) later this year. The one-day options were brutal, clocking in at over 14 hours of total travel time. The thought of enduring that in economy was daunting, but the cost of upgrading to a premium cabin was just as painful.
I was stuck between a rock and a hard place: sacrifice comfort or sacrifice my budget. Then, while searching for flights using Points Path, I stumbled upon a creative routing that sparked an idea.

Explore the collectionThe itinerary that caught my eye was a British Airways flight that split the journey over two days. It involved a late-afternoon flight from Santorini to London-Heathrow (LHR), which is a very manageable four-hour hop. Then, a 16-hour overnight layover would give us plenty of time to get to an airport hotel for a full night of real, horizontal sleep.
The next day, we’d tackle the longer leg: an eight-hour nonstop flight from London to our home airport in Raleigh. Because we had the flexibility in our schedule to add an extra day to our travel, this solution was perfect. It kept both of our travel days within our eight-hour comfort threshold, eliminating the need to splurge on a premium cabin.
London-Heathrow is a particularly great airport to use this strategy, as there’s an IHG property inside the airport itself. No off-airport shuttles! I booked the Holiday Inn Express London Heathrow T4 for under $200, which includes free breakfast for my entire family. I’ll also earn up to 26x total points by paying for the stay on my IHG One Rewards Premier Credit Card.

The 10 cheapest days to fly this summerBy choosing this two-day itinerary, I saved over $1,500 per ticket compared to the cost of a one-day business-class flight. It’s a powerful reminder that sometimes the best way to boost your comfort isn’t by spending more money, but by spending a little more time.
We often think of comfort in terms of wider seats and better meals, but what about arriving at your destination feeling rested and ready to go? By strategically stretching out our journey, we achieved a higher level of comfort than a more expensive, single-day trip would have provided. It’s a travel hack that redefines the relationship between time, money, and well-being.
