What if you could get airline status without doing the flying?

That’s exactly what airline status matches allow. These programs let you leverage the elite status you already have with one airline to receive comparable status with another carrier, often with far less effort.

The result? Key elite benefits like free checked bags, priority boarding, and even complimentary upgrades — especially once you understand how airline alliances extend your elite perks. Here’s how it works.

Each airline does it slightly differently

Each airline status match works differently, and their rules are always subject to change.

Take the American Airlines’ AAdvantage status match, for example. This program lets you automatically qualify for a certain tier of status for four months, and all you need to do is submit proof of your equivalent status with another major U.S. airline.

With United’s MileagePlus Premier status match, on the other hand, you have to submit proof of your existing status with another airline and complete an "activating flight" within 90 days for your new status to apply.

Some airlines also run "status challenges" that let you qualify for elite status after flying a certain number of miles or segments. Some programs may also ask you to pay a specific dollar amount to try out a new status.

Many other carriers run similar programs, including:

Your mortgage can be a points machine!

If you’re already putting a good chunk of your monthly spend on a credit card, the new Bilt 2.0 cards can help turn both your everyday purchases and your housing payment into an amazing vacation. Bilt’s three new credit cards have completely changed the playbook for earning rewards on one of your biggest monthly expenses. You can earn Bilt Points that transfer 1:1 to your favorite airline and hotel programs, or can be redeemed for future housing payments, Lyft rides, and more. Your housing payments can now get you even closer to your next vacation!* *Additional terms apply. Subject to eligibility and approval. Get the most out of your status match

You can status-match to another airline program for any reason at all, but it makes the most sense when you have relevant travel plans coming up. For example, I have Delta Diamond Medallion status and recently did an American Airlines status match to American AAdvantage Executive Platinum status for a few upcoming flights I have on American and Fiji Airways.

You might also consider a status match if you recently moved and want to try out a different airline program that might work better from your new home airport.

To ensure you get the most out of a status match and actually qualify, you should:

  • Read the fine print. Status match and challenge programs all have their share of fine print, and the program details tend to change over time. Make sure you fully understand the rules so you can do exactly what’s required to earn the new status.
  • Check for new programs. Some airlines offer status match programs off and on over time. If you want status with an airline that's not offering a match right now, don't forget to check back. This is also one of several reasons it’s worth signing up for airline newsletters and staying up to date on their offers and promotions.
  • Consider the timing. Many programs only let you enjoy elite benefits for a certain period of time unless you're able to meet their requirements to maintain the new status. If you don't plan to meet the requirements to keep your new status, you'll want to time your match application carefully around upcoming travel plans.
  • Watch out for once-per-lifetime limits. Some airlines only let you match status once, so you’ll want to be strategic about when you take advantage.
