Take the American Airlines’ AAdvantage status match, for example. This program lets you automatically qualify for a certain tier of status for four months, and all you need to do is submit proof of your equivalent status with another major U.S. airline.
With United’s MileagePlus Premier status match, on the other hand, you have to submit proof of your existing status with another airline and complete an "activating flight" within 90 days for your new status to apply.
Some airlines also run "status challenges" that let you qualify for elite status after flying a certain number of miles or segments. Some programs may also ask you to pay a specific dollar amount to try out a new status.
